Crowd-pleaser Henri Camara came off the bench to hit his first Premier League goal for two seasons and lift Wigan clear of the drop-zone with a well-deserved win over the Toffees.
Camara, who drew a blank last year while on loan at West Ham, had only been on the pitch for six minutes when he struck the decisive blow and condemned Everton to only their second away defeat of the season.
It had been an action-packed opening half but there were no goals thanks to the two keepers who were both on top form.
Chris Kirkland was the Wigan hero early on snuffing out Everton's first real threat of the night. The Latics were caught on the break and Yakubu picked out Louis Saha with a terrific ball in from the left but Kirkland read it well and kept out the former Manchester United's 12-yard strike.
Tim Howard was in action saving from Maynor Figueroa after Wilson Palacios snapped up a deflected pass to set up the shooting chance.
Ryan Taylor gifted Everton a corner but Tim Cahill headed over when Mikel Arteta floated it in. Taylor made amends with a trademark free-kick missing the target by inches from 25 yards.
Michael Brown showed why he's found goals hard to come by when he blazed over wasting a clear-cut chance to shoot Wigan in front.
Cahill was out of luck again steering another header over from Leon Osman's deep cross but Wigan suffered too when Palacios nodded one wide.
Howard kept the scoreline blank saving a header from Titus Bramble at the foot of his right post and in stoppage time, the American did it again with a terrific double save.
He tipped aside the shot from Lee Cattermole and then from the corner he came to the rescue again punching out a Paul Scharner header.
Steve Bruce sent on Camara for Olivier Kapo and it proved an inspired change as the Senegal striker hit the goal after great build-up play from Brown and Antonio Valencia.
The Ecuador international went close to getting a second for Wigan but Howard did well to beat out the shot before Scharner protected the lead with a crucial block from Arteta.
And, in stoppage time, Cahill hammered over to blow the chance of an equaliser.
