Good start

Everton's squad was split in two and played in simultaneous matches at Gigg Lane and Coleraine Showgrounds.

Both Everton teams featured a host of reserve and youth team players and it was the youngsters that provided the cutting edge in both matches.

At Gigg Lane, Everton's new signing from Swindon, Luke Jutkiewicz (always have to cut and paste that one!) netted the only goal in the Blues' 1-0 win.

The 18-year-old headed home in the 56th minute to earn a win for the Blues but was not getting carried away with netting on his debut.

Jutkiewicz said: ""It is always good to get a goal in youre first game but there are a lot of things I could have done better. It was a bit of a scrappy goal but they all count."

He played up[ front alongside Victor Anichebe and the two forged a good attacking partnership during the 90 minutes.

Over in Northern Ireland, it was two of Everton's other youngsters that netted both goals in a 2-0 over a Northern Ireland XI.

James Vaughan opened the scoring in the 27th minute as he bundled the ball over the line from a corner.

Everton's lead was then doubled in the 79th minute as Kieran Agard, a 66th minute replacement for Andy Johnson, clipped the ball home after being played in by Stephen Connor.

There was no Everton debut for Phil Jagielka but it was good to see Moyes giving a number of Everton's younger squad players a run out.

The teams lined up as follows:

Everton XI (at Gigg Lane):
Turner, Irving, Valente, Rodwell, Lescott, van der Meyde, de Silva, Carsley, Molyneux (Harpur 85), Vaughan (Connor 72), Johnson (Agard 66).

Everton XI (at Coleraine Showgrounds):
Ruddy, Hibbert, Stubbs, Dennehy, Boyle, Morrison, Neville, Vidarsson, Kissock, Jutkiewicz, Anichebe.
