It was a well disiplined performance by Crewe to frustrate Everton, who were not eaxctly bad, but just failed to create anything, at all. Ginola settled in well, and despite being the best player on the park, he lacked support, and Campbell looked slow for most of the game.

The first half was mostly a non event, one or two good touches from Ginola, he was linking up well with Blomqvist on the left, led to Everton getting the ball to the Crewe 18 yard line but no further. All credit to the visitors, they defended well throughout.

There was little in the way of oppotunity, although both sides had half chances.First, Scott Gemmill's cross-shot was well held by Clayton Ince, whose throw prompted a Crewe counter which saw Neil Sorvel test Steve Simonsen with a dipping volley which bounced just in front of the Everton keeper.

Ince in the Crewe goal would quite rightly have won man of the match, he had very little to do in the way of shoits, but he continually took crosses with a confidence that many premiership 'keepers should learn from.

Dean Ashton also looked good fro the visitors, going close witha header that he really should have done more with. One positive was that the Everton defence were as solid as ever, the back for of Clarke, Weir,Stubbs and Naysmith would definatly be my first choice. The last gasp of excitment in the first half was a fierce volley from Ginola that was well blocked by a Crewe defender.

The second half started brighter for the blues, with more pressure being placed on the visitors. However, it was more obvious than ever that Kevin Campbell was not being very effective playing alone up front. Ginola again went close with a 30 yard free kick, Crewe were saved only by Watson sticking his head out to deflect the ball for a corner.

The introduction of Moore and Gascoigne was overdue, but niether player made any real impact once on the field. WS has to know that we need two strikers up front. Quite why he thinks that Campbell can do a better job on his own that he would alongside Moore is beyond me.

Crewe had the best chance of the match on 73 minutes. Hulse met Dave Brammer's cross at the near post with a half-volley that clipped the Everton bar.

Moore had a shot zip past the post on 88 minutes, but that was as good as Everton got. If WS has money to spend, he needs to buy a striker.
