Bury 1-3 Everton XI

Andy Johnson was the big draw at Bury as over 2,000 Evertonians made the trip to Gigg Lane to run the rule over our record signing.

Despite failing to find the net, Johnson had an impressive match and his pace and ability to find space up front should give Everton's attack a greater edge next season.

It also looks like the Blues could have further options up front as Victor Anichebe picked up where he left off against West Brom at the back end of last season.

The young striker showed great composure in front of goal to net two of Everton's three goals.

His first came after nine minutes when he was found in the six yard box by Leon Osman and struck a close-range effort past Alan Fettis in the Bury goal.

Everton then doubled their lead nine minutes later when Mikel Arteta clipped a sublime free kick past the despairing Fettis.

Bury then pulled one back on 35 minutes as Matthew Tipton hammered a stunning volley from outside the area that flew into the net despite the best efforts of Iain Turner.

The game was finally made safe in the 62nd minute when Anichebe grabbed his second of the afternoon.

Mikel Arteta looped a ball over the outrushing Bury defence and the unmarked Anichebe beat the offside trap and coolly chested the ball down before volleying past Fettis.

Everton were in control for large portions of the game and the young eleven played some impressive football that bodes well for next season and beyond.
