Still strung out

A deal for Owen was first mooted during the summer with one imaginative rumour even suggesting that Umbro, Everton's kit manufacturer and Owen's boot sponsor, would subsidise the little Welshman's wages.

And, with the transfer window looming and Everton really, really, really in need of a striker the rumours have started once again.

Incidentally, has any other team in history ever deployed a 4-6-0 formation? Let alone won...away...at Man City....in the last minute? Thought not!

Back to the Owen story, because it still hasn't gone away, and the boyhood Blue, yeah another one, has just six months left on his current deal at Newcastle and it's thought that the North East club could be looking to cash in on the striker in January and not risk losing him for nothing in June.

But, Newcastle manager, Joe Kinnear, has refuted the claims that Owen will be leaving next month but won't rule out the striker departing in summer.

Kinnear said: "What I am led to believe is that [Owen] has numerous options. Lots of clubs have inquired to his agent about going in June. There is no chance of him going in January. Why lose a goalscorer when you are fighting relegation and the owner is aware of that."

He added: "What is the point of getting £3 million and being relegated? I am 100 per cent certain that, even if a bid comes in next month, the board will back me even if it means him going for nothing in June."

Which is a fair point really!

If it did come off it would be a great coup for the Blues and, despite being plauged by injury since he left the tin mine, Owen's goalscoring record is stuill impressive as he netted 16 goals in 42 games at Real Madrid, only 22 of which he started, and has so far scored 29 times in 51 appearances for Newcastle.

But with the players' restrictive wage demands, Owen is on over £100,000 a week on Tyneside, the rumours that Tottenham, Chelsea and Man City could also be in for the striker and the fact that there has been no comment from Everton on any interest in him, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one!

David Nugent on the other hand...
