Quiet summer pleases Arteta

The Toffees have done well to steer clear of the endless rounds of transfer gossip, with few of those on the books at Goodison Park having been linked with moves elsewhere.

David Moyes was forced to knock back a bid from Arsenal for Phil Jagielka on Thursday, but that is the first time the Scot has had to fend off such an advance.

The relative calm on Merseyside this summer stands in stark contrast to previous years, when the likes of Arteta have seen their future called into question on a regular basis.

The Spanish midfielder is relieved to have been handed a break this time around, with pre-season preparations a lot easier when you are not the subject of constant rumours.

"What I like about this pre-season is that we are not talking about transfers, about rumours, about this and that," Arteta told the Liverpool Echo.

"Last year I think, mentally, everyone was waiting for two or three big players to decide their futures. There was talk of some players leaving, myself included, and it affected us.

"This year, we are not expecting anything like that. We are expecting to be as we are right now.

"The club is in a situation at the moment where it hasn't got the money to go out and buy big players. I think we all accept that.

"So whilst we would all like to have two or three new key players to make our team better, at the moment we know the situation is difficult and we have to accept the club's position, because they are doing it to protect the club from trouble.

"What we need to do is to try and get the best out of what we do have.

"We were at dinner the other night and we were all saying 'let's accept that we don't have the money to spend, so while we are here, we work with what we have got'. We accept it."
