MATCH PREVIEW

How this game will end up is anyone's guess. Both sides have been painfully inconsistent this season, with Everton's FA Cup exit to Championship side Reading - after knocking holders Chelsea out in the previous round - the latest surprise.

There are still 10 games to go and we don't want the season to have a nasty end to it

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew

Everton's midweek misery was compounded by the news that Marouane Fellaini requires ankle surgery and will miss the rest of the season. With fellow midfielder Tim Cahill also injured, the Toffees are in danger of finishing in the bottom half of the table for the first time since 2006.

Newcastle's return to the top flight has provided plenty of highlights. However, despite thrashing Aston Villa (6-0), Sunderland (5-1) and West Ham (5-0) this season, they have not managed back-to-back wins at St James' Park and lie a lowly 17th in the home form table.

Perhaps their campaign is best summed up by last month's remarkable 4-4 draw with Arsenal. We saw the best and worst of Newcastle in that game, and it showed how quickly fortunes can change. Neither Newcastle nor Everton need reminding of that.
