Alan Pardew's side, who remain unbeaten in the top flight, exploded out of the blocks and led inside 12 minutes when Dutchman Heitinga turned Danny Simpson's cross past Tim Howard.
The next goal was as brilliant as that the opener had been comical, with Taylor latching onto a bouncing ball some 25 yards from goal, before unleashing a ferocious, dipping drive that clipped the underside of the crossbar on the way in.
Jack Rodwell pulled a goal back from a corner in first-half stoppage time and, although the visitors enjoyed significantly more of the ball after the break, Newcastle held on.
