The left back had initialy rejected the club's offer of a one year deal, and had returned to Italy. However, with David Moyes not finding an alternative he was happy with in the transfer market, and with Kevin Kilbane currently playing at left back, the decision was made to improve the offer to Pistone, who had a strong season last year, playing 39 times for Everton.

Pistone said: "There was a point when I thought that maybe I would not be coming back. But I have always been in contact with somebody at the club and I have always been in negotiations during the period."

Assistane manager Alan Irvine added "We are obviously delighted. Hopefully he can have as good a season for us as he did last season."
