A 54th minute foul on City's Gelson Fernandes saw him pick up the caution that will rule him out of the trip to the Stadium of Light.
Phil Neville and Steven Pienaar also started the City game on four bookings each but neither player will be facing an imminent suspension as all bookings picked up so far this season have now been annulled.
So Carsley was pretty unlucky to get booked when he did!
Possibly of more concern is that Joseph Yobo and Manuel Fernandes are both one booking away from a European ban.
But, given the form of Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott, and the lack of form from Fernades, it's unlikely that either player will be that sorely missed.
