Ref Watch...Mark Halsey

I don't know, because I've never been in close quarters with Mr Halsey, but he looks to me to be one of those people that can't help but spit when they talk.

A bit like Roy Hattersley's puppet on Spitting Image!

Anyway, on the face of it, Mark Halsey's appointment isn't bad news for Everton as the Blues have won all three games he has taken charge of this term.

He was the man in the middle of the game at White Hart Lane in August when an inspired Everton display was rewarded with a 3-1 win and no bookings for the Blues.

He then took charge of two Everton games in quick succession at the beginning of December.

Mr Halsey refereed the 1-0 win over Man City, giving cautions to Cahill and Carsley, as well as the 2-1 Carling Cup win at West Ham when Yakubu was the only Everton player booked.

So three wins and three cautions in three games is not really a record that anyone can argue with.

He has taken charge of just one Reading game this season and it was one that, you could say, the Royals were unlucky to lose.

Halsey was the man in the middle of that mad game at Fratton Park when Portsmouth beat Reading 7-4 and the only Royals player he booked that day was Michael Duberry (yes he's still playing)...and that was in the 90th minute!

Halsey's record this season reads:

Games refereed - 17
Yellow cards - 51
Red cards - 2

This gives him an average of just 3.12 cards per game which is lower than that of all but four of the 19 Premier League referees.
